Daehan Kevin Wee, POP GENRES ASSIGNMENT 2, Fan Fiction

PART 1

My fan fiction extends each two part of the movie scene. One is part of Act 1: Call to adventure and the other is part of Act 3: Return with the elixir. (Vogler’s The Three Act Structure and the Mythic Structure)

ACT 1 (Call to adventure part of the movie)

The night before Ged went to training to become a wizard. He exchanged a final greeting with Diana under the tree on a hill near the lake. They buried their rings under the ground.

“Are you ready to go?” Diana said.
“Yes,” Ged said.

Diana draws a small box from her pocket.

“We put our rings in it and bury it here, and in two years’ time let`s meet here again and open the box. Okay?” Diana said.

Hopefully, they will put the rings on each other`s fingers again on that day, together.

Ged looks at her with a smile, then nods his head, and he thinks that ‘this is her way of saying goodbye’, and he keeps repeating in his mind that two years isn`t too long. Then he decided to make Earthsea peaceful before those two years pass.

“How much will we change in two years? I want to meet you soon, so I would like to…put your ring in your finger again,” Diana said.
“Yes… don`t worry, I will,” Ged smiled and said.

They made a promise to meet two years later, and then they separated. When they meet then, they may be different from what they are now. They may become closer or stay forever apart. They can only choose one.

ACT 3 (Return with the elixir part of the movie)

Through the Ged and Tenar combined the powerful amulets, the Nameless Ones had been restrained deep beneath the Temple on the Island of Atuan again. Earthsea was at peace.

After the victory Ged and Tenar rebuilt the city of Atuan temple, Roke Academy, and all of the ruined Islands from the war over more than three years. Since then, Tenar become the high priestess of Atuan again. Tenar wants to marry Ged and to live together because she loves him and his struggle to keep the peace together in the Atuan. However, Ged wants to return to his village, then he wants create a magic academy in his hometown to teach magic to whoever wants to protect Earthsea`s peace by using the magic power. In addition, even though he is a year late with his promise to Diana, but he wants to return to lovely Diana, his father and the people of his village. In spite of Tenar`s persuasion, Ged had a strong will to get back to his village, Tenar sent Ged to his village with a promise to see each other again.

Ged and Vetch pack up their baggage, then sail across the sea to get to Ged`s village. On the sailing boat back to his hometown Ged just thinks a minute that ‘when I meet her again, I will show her a different me for her and my future`s sake’.

Ged kept himself more busier than anyone else over the three years.

Meanwhile, when the news comes, which Ged saved Earthsea from the evil king, Tygath and the Nameless Ones, Diana, Ged`s father and village people are very glad. His father is very proud of his son`s achievements. Diana thinks that she may be able to meet him in the near future. The time flow from those three months, six months…one year…and more than two years. Ged didn`t come despite Diana`s continued waiting. No one knows when Ged will come. Finally, Diana began to think that Ged had a beautiful life without her, so she left the Ten Alders to forget the Ged and make a new life. Diana says goodbye to the village people, and leaves the town without telling anyone where she is going or why she leaves, only a letter to Ged.

Dear loving Ged

Ged of Ten Alders!
Where are you now?
Can you hear my voice in there?
Ged, I'm sorry.
I really can`t forget you in here. It`s stronger than me. Ged.
I'm really sorry. I can`t stay here no more. I thought I was different, but I`m just a helpless girl. Ged. I will pray for your happiness no matter where I am. God bless you Ged.

Finally, Ged and Vetch arrived in their hometown. His father and the village people welcome their return home with glory. Every person of the village came to meet Ged, but Ged can`t find the one he was looking for.

Ged greets his father with a smile, then asks “where is Diana?”
“Good job my son. Unfortunately, Diana had left the town a year ago. She didn`t leave any information to us except this letter” Father said.

Ged falls into a silence for a minute. His head is filled with a mishmash of jumbled thoughts.

After that, he tries to visit a number of Islands in Earthsea to look for her, but he can`t find Diana any where.

Two years passed.

Ged recovers his sense. Then he founded his magic academy. Ogion, Vetch and Marion regained their magical ability and worked together in magic academy. Ogion and Ged managed the magic academy together for the peace of the Earthsea. Later, the magic academy became the most famous academy in Earthsea. There are many people come to magic academy not only those from Ten Alders, but from all across the Earthsea Islands.

In that time, Ged met an old man, Alfred of the town. Alfred asks Ged about Diana.

“Did you forget about Diana?”Alfred asked.
“I believe that if we were destined to meet, we would meet by chance somewhere,” Ged said.
“Do you know what destiny is? Destiny builds a bridge of opportunity for people,” Alfred said.

One day, a pigeon flies to Ged and says that ‘a red dragon invades one of the Earthsea Islands, the dragon traps many people in a ruined castle. There also includes your aunt. They need someone who know the dragon`s true name to restrain it. Ged changes to sparrow hawk, then flew to the Island directly. Ged says the true name of the dragon`s and the dragon recoils, restrained once more. After that, Ged saves all of the trapped people including his aunt, Dorothy.

“Oh you’re my savior. How long it`s been? My naughty nephew, but now you look like a great man,” Dorothy said.
“Thanks, you still look young. How have you been?” Ged said.
“I am always good; anyway, I would like to introduce to you to someone. Maybe you guys can become friends?” Dorothy said.

Then he saw her, and they exchange looks of astonishment with each other for a moment that felt like a minute.

“Her name is Diana”, Dorothy told him.

Part 2: Commentary

I chose to do my fan fiction on Earthsea (2004) by Robert Lieberman. My fan fiction replicates on Vogler’s (1998) mythic structure, which is ‘The Three Act Structure and The Mythic Structure’, and character archetypes. Among them, I mainly focus my fan fiction on part of Act 3: Return with Elixir, and also do briefly flash back to part of Act 1: Call to Adventure, to help establish the new story (Vogler, 1998).

First of all, through Vogler’s (1998) mythic structure, I wrote two new stories, one is the extension story, Act 3, that takes place at the end of the movie after Ged and Tenar completed the mission which restrained the Nameless Ones into the tomb of Atuan again by combining the powerful amulets. After they finished the journey, Ged restored the Earthsea Islands with Tenar. Then he left Tenar because he wanted to meet Diana again. The reason for this was because Ged and Diana had made a promise, which I wrote as a new story in my fan fiction Act 1, before Ged left the Ten Alders.

Secondly, I set up my new extension story when Ged was called to adventure in the movie. The new story was inserted the night before Ged was to leave the hometown to be a wizard. Act 1 gave a clue why Ged wanted to come back after completing all of his missions.

Thirdly, I chose ‘the third person/omniscient view point’ which describes all of the events and characters not by an inside character but by an outside /omniscient person. In addition, I also used dialogic and epistolary style in my fan fiction.

Lastly, I included Vogler’s (1998) character archetypes. Moreover, I put both same characters and new characters in my fan fiction.

Ged carried on as the protagonist of my story. He protected not only Earthsea`s peace but also the promise of a lovely girlfriend.

Ogion and Marion were Ged`s mentors. They helped not only to develop Ged`s magic skills, but also to grow to be the proprietor of the best magic academy.

Diana was the threshold guardian. She provided an essential test, by leaving Ged`s hometown, to tested Ged’s commitment and worth in his pursuit of her (Vogler, 1998).

There were three heralds in my fan fiction: Alfred, pigeon and Dorothy. Alfred gave a tip to Ged by his years of experience. Pigeon announced an important event verbally to Ged (Changingminds, n.d.); that he could meet Diana again. Dorothy introduced the importance of relationship between Ged and Diana (Changingminds, n.d.).

The dragon played roles both as shapeshifter and as shadow. The dragon had dramatic function in re-introducing Ged to Diana, and dragon embodied fantasy figure (Vogler, 1998). In addition, the dragon also represented the darker side of character in my fan fiction (Vogler, 1998).

According to those reasons, my fan fiction narrative was developed with consideration to the components of Vogler’s (1998) mythic structure and character archetypes.

Fan-fiction by Mary Walker

Fan-fiction based on ‘Princess Mononoke’.

Lady Eboshi

"Lady Eboshi? They're back." I heard the fear in his voice and this annoyed me. "If it's a war they want, it's a war they'll get; now when there is a real emergency you may alert me." He started to retreat "Y-y-yes Ma'am". Sometimes I wondered about the men in Iron town, they seemed more fearful than the women. The only reason my town was still standing was because of the women. I walked out to the courtyard and in the distance I saw her. Her eyes glistened and she stood firm with a glare across her face. It wasn't long before I noticed her family, they were always close by. Before I had a chance to call out she had vanished, leaving the cool crisp night feeling eerie. I knew it wouldn't be long before they'd be back. San, and her wolf clan.

I awoke to see a young man sneaking in my chamber. I grabbed my rifle ready to fire but he gestured for me to be quiet. He obviously didn't know who I was, what I was capable of, and the gesture bothered me. "Young man, this is my town I will not be told what to..." The stranger quickly ran towards me and covered my mouth. He whispered in a sharp tone "Lady Eboshi, I know who you are but you are in danger, iron town is in danger, as well as the forest. I need your help, but please it must be kept secret!" I was unsure but took the benefit of the doubt and decided I would hear the young man out. "Please, take a seat."

"You want me to what?" I almost laughed at the insane idea the young man had for me. I learned that his name was Ashitaka. Prince Ashitaka. He had travelled from distant lands to ask me to cure him from a curse; a curse which I doubted was true. "Please, don't laugh! I need you to help me! Without your help, I will die and you will lose everything, please help me restore peace to the land" he pleaded convincingly. For a moment I considered all that I could do but this was impossible. Me working alongside San and the wolf clan, who I despised; prince Ashitaka could forget that. He had many other capable people that could help him I was sure. "I'm sorry Ashitaka, but I am not the right person to help you!"

As I walked Ashitaka out of Iron town I couldn't help but feel guilty. Helping people was what I loved to do but I did this through offering the outcasts work. I gave them jobs, a nice lifestyle of equality. Deciding to help the environment would destroy everything I believed in, how would my business thrive? I needed the land and resources. Just as I got to the gate, I heard a noise. I whipped around to see San, the wolf girl charging at me with a spear, she screamed "You are going to die for what you've done to the forest! Stop clearing our land!!!" I jumped out of the way just in time, dodging the sharp end that should have been thrust in to me. San was fuming, I could see it. Despite this she really was no threat to me. I wrestled to get the spear off her and suddenly the role reversed and I was in control. Life and death was in my hands; she clearly did not understand this concept. She continued to ramble and curse. I edged the spear close to her neck and whispered "Don't be naive! You are not welcome here" just as I did, a hand reached down and pulled the spear away.

I was startled, the hand was strong and when it was exposed it was clearly not the feature of a human. It vibrated, throbbed and jilted. I looked into the eyes of the man who owned this monster of a hand and saw it was Prince Ashitaka. He was struggling to stay in control and in his grasp the spear snapped. He clenched his teeth together, clearly trying to fight against the evil spirit possessing him. The words "Man-kind will pay! Lady Eboshi must die!" We're chanted as I stood in disbelief. It was only now that I had realized the curse was true, and I had somewhat been responsible for it. I saw the pain and rage feed through Ashitaka's eyes. The hatred rippled like waves and it consumed him. I wondered for a moment if he would be able to overcome the disease. San and I stood together stunned. Eventually the malicious being passed on and Prince Ashitaka returned. After what I had witnessed I decided I would help; even if it did mean putting aside my long beheld feud with the wolves.

San, sat in a corner while Ashitaka shared his story, we both sat intrigued. Apparently he had come to be cursed after a wild boar possessed by a demon took charge at him, he claimed the boar had come from Iron town as there was a piece of iron in the pit of its belly. I couldn't remember shooting such animal, but it was probably true. The Prince shared his idea of how we could stop the demon boar from possessing anyone else. Due to the curse of hatred, I had to try and make amends to the forest and forest gods. In return they would leave me in peace, there was only one problem however, I could not see how Iron town and the forest would be able to co-exist.

As we talked some more there was a sudden uproar of panic, I heard villagers screaming and I peeked out to see what the fuss was about. At the sturdy gates there were thousands of boars, all contaminated and contagious with the disease of hatred. I saw some people being eaten and decapitated, as this happened their souls would turn dark and a fiery tar would melt contaminating and painting the town with passionate hate, a deadly evil. I looked at Ashitaka and saw he too was struggling to maintain his normal self. San was quiet and I wondered if I trusted her; part of me thought she enjoyed seeing my town suffer in such a horrific way. I grabbed my rifle and marched out but Ashitaka's firm grip stopped me. "No, can't you see that it what they want! They will infect you too! You will be of no help when you are dead!" I scoffed "Well I can't just stand here and watch my people suffer! They have faith in me! I will protect them!" I ignored Ashitaka and marched out of the chambers to fight.

Exegesis:

I based my story on 'Princess Mononoke' directed by Hayao Miyazaki. In this Fan-fiction I have focused on writing it from Lady Eboshi's perspective and although there are noticeable changes from the storyline there are still some similar themes I kept.

To write this story I tried to incorporate some of Vogler's story structure points (1998), mainly focusing on the call to adventure, refusal of the call and Tests, allies, enemies. In this fan-fiction Lady Eboshi is the one who gets the call to adventure, with Prince Ashitaka awaking her at night, he then asks for her help specifically as she is the only one that can help him, the curse, Iron town and the forest. Lady Eboshi likes to help people however she doesn't believe Ashitaka and she doesn't want to work alongside the wolves (her enemies). Once the refusal to the call is made Eboshi decides to walk Ashitaka out of Iron town so he can therefore go and find someone else to help. The refusal to the call is important in a story structure as according to Vogler (1998) it makes the character more believable and we can identify with possibly saying or doing the same, as it is only natural to have self-doubt.

Tests, allies and enemies are presented in my story in numerous ways. The first test is whether Eboshi will help Ashitaka, even when it is revealed to her that he is cursed. An ally that Eboshi will have to work alongside is the wolves, whom she hates this in some way is also a test, to see whether she can work together for the greater good of everyone around her. Working alongside the wolves is also hard for her as she doesn't know whether she can trust them. Trust is important and something Lady Eboshi has to learn, especially as she doesn't know Ashitaka and she has everything to lose (Iron town). The enemies that are developed briefly in the story are the boars, they are they animals that carry the disease of hatred for mankind and want to punish them.

Although some of these ideas were touched on briefly Vogler also has character archetypes that contribute in making a successful storyline. The one that I used was the hero. As defined by Vogler (1998) 'The hero or heroine is the classic protagonist of the story with whom we associate most. They embody our most aspirational values and put higher duty and the welfare of others before their own, even to extreme forms of self-sacrifice. Achieving the goal of the story may thus be achieved only at terrible personal cost, although the hero may gain much personal learning and growth in the transition. Heroes can be willing or unwilling, deliberate or accidental, solitary or leaders, already-recognized as a hero or start out as an ordinary person.'

In my fan-fiction Lady Eboshi is the intended hero, despite the original film where Ashitaka was. Although it is hard to compare from how Eboshi was to how she is going to be, the story ends on an event that will test her character and either make her or break her. She is an unlikely hero that’s motives are mainly to help people because of her nature; although she can be mistaken as arrogant. She is defined as a hero through her willingness to put aside her differences for the good of her town and the forest, as well as Ashitaka; even though she is hesitant.

Fan fiction by Naufa Abdul Sattar (based on The Blue Lotus).

Fan fiction - Based on The Adventures of Tintin: The Blue Lotus by Hergé (1936)

By: Naufa Abdul Sattar

Commentary

My fan fiction is based on the fifth volume of Herge’s (1936) The Adventures of Tintin comic series, known as the “Blue Lotus”. It aims to completely deviate from the initial plot line and directs the audience to a continuation of the story from an entirely different perspective.
I have chosen to name the title of the fan fiction in German, in order to provide somewhat of a relevance to the story’s indigenous roots – thus the title “Tintin Erfüllt Tod”. The term “erfüllt” in German translates to ‘meets’ in English, and “Tod” referring to ‘death’.
Although it is perhaps a fairly direct title and gives an insight into what the plotline may lead to or imply, personally, I do think it is quite a just assumption to state that it creates somewhat of a suspense – given that the life one of the most beloved heroes in graphic novel history may be at a critically grave point in his life; or worse, perhaps a closer encounter to death that he had ever come to.
After having narrowly escaped danger in various different ways throughout the years, this fan fiction attempts goes far beyond this narrow line and explores a deeper, darker area of  ‘adventure’. As an effort to try and emotionally engage and draw the audience into the darker psychological essence of the plot – an immense amount of descriptive language has been utlised throughout the fan fiction to create a more realistically convincing perception.

My fan fiction does represent some of  Vogler’s (1998) plot points of the mythic structure on some level, with regard to the three acts, that pertain to the writer’s journey.
Act 1 for instance, is concerned with the establishment of the circumstance, characters and the fundamental components of the structure that creates complex speculation relating to the subsequent apex of the plot (Vogler, 1998). In this particular fan fiction, the setting originates from the where the “Blue Lotus” left off and introduces the audience to Tintin, his dog Snowy and the other significant supporting characters that influence the makeup of the story. It also deviates towards the potential turning point that leads toward the crucial themes of the plot. Furthermore, the first act presents the audience with the stimulating factors that triggers the very first turning point of the story (Vogler, 1998). In this case, the mysterious revelations and strange happenings in a surrounding that Tintin was supposedly comfortable with, proves for an appropriate transition from one point to another.
Act 2 integrates the main themes and ideas discussed in the first act and focuses on further development through the course of several hurdles that drives the story near a conclusion (Vogler, 1998). This fan fiction provides an evolution of the storyline through the exploration of the mysterious encounters and the speculative nature of the happenings that Tintin and Snowy come into contact with.
As Vogler (1998) suggests, the third and final act is where the audience is presented with the grand finale, usually centering on some sort of resolution – hypothetical or not. This fan fictures Vogler’s (1998) definition of the third act by holding Tintin at an extremely critical stage pertaining to his death, that could possibly be depicted as somewhat of a abstract ending.

Thus, it is perhaps fair to conclude by stating that this fan fiction has attempted to follow Vogler’s (1998) structure with respect to his notions of creating a narrative and providing the audience with a story that proves to potentially be one that is emotionally engaging.

Tintin Erfüllt Tod

There he was, Mitsuhirato, with bloodshot eyes, screaming bloody murder while grasping tightly onto a large blade on the tips of his crinkled fingers. Tintin was backed up into a corner, nowhere to escape, nothing to defend himself with – and the sight of his dead just a few feet away from him did not help either. Snowy, his beloved Snowy, his only companion, gone forever, strangled right before his eyes. He was angry, enraged even. But fear overcame his mad fury. For the first time he felt weak, helpless, his heart racing faster each second. His muscles tense, drenched in sweat, he attempted to take what he thought was his last breath.

Desperately gasping for air, Tintin awoke suddenly, jerking his way up and out of bed, almost choking on his own breath. Catching a glimpse of Snowy lying restlessly on his crinkled sheets, he breathed a sigh of relief, slowly resting his arms on the bedside table. He checked the time – 3 AM. Wiping away his drenched forehead, he walked towards the window, greeting the midnight breeze. “This reoccurring dream, what does it mean?”; he thought to himself. “Perhaps a harvested guilt, sympathy? … because of his suicide?”, he sighed, vigorously shaking his head in contemplation.

He looked up at the surrounding buildings, restless, anxious, yet lost in deep thought. The quite crackle of footsteps on the gravel pit by the adjacent street suddenly distracted him. “There he is again, Snowy”, he whispered. He could never quite catch a perfect glimpse of this mysterious figure in black – All he knew was that he was seeing a lot of this person, and he was beginning to have an eerie feeling that this, was looking less like a coincidence.

Staring blankly at the ceiling, Tintin lay sighing in bed, scratching his auburn locks in one hand fiddling with Snowy’s soft curly coat with the other. “I almost feel like we need to take another trip back to India, and vacation with the Maharaja”. A barking Snowy leapt towards Tintin and anxiously paced around Tintin’s legs letting out a sad whimper. “I know, I know, I love being back home too,” he said smiling. “But I need to know who he is, what he’s doing here”. Leaping out of bed, he got his coat and made his way to the front door. “Just when we thought we’d take a break huh Snowy?”.

“You hungry boy?”. Snowy barked agreeing, as they passed the various local street cafes. They made their way into an inner street corner. They stopped at a decent looking bright blue café, and was greeted by a young Japanese woman dressed in a floral kimono. “Ohaiyogozaimu”, she said politely bowing. Just then, through the hallway curtains that lead to the kitchen area, crept a little boy. His vague expression spoke volumes – he must have been through a rough patch in his life. The innocent childlike gleam that persisted in so many children was lost in him. “My nephew”, the lady said as she made her way to the teapot by the counter. “Tea?”;  she asked Tintin. “Yes please!”.

Tintin gazed at this oriental beauty that stood before him pouring him a cup of Japanese green tea. Observing every single detail on her pale skin – the redness of her cheeks, the graceful shaping of her eyebrows, her perfectly shaped chin, just everything about her. Suddenly, he felt a hot burning sensation on his arm. “Aaahhhh”, he exclaimed in pain. This lady had deliberately poured a burning hot tea onto him. But Why?. Without a second to lose, almost as if on cue, the little boy grabbed a hold of Snowy by the throat, pointing a loaded gun by his ear. “Snowy!” , as he leaped forward to his aid, he felt a strong punch by his abdomen, and within seconds he was pinned by the gorge, onto a shaky wall to the side of the café.
“Yamayahirato, my name, remember it!”, she said letting out an evil grin.

Tintin looked helpless at Snowy as the young boy grasped on to his neck tigher. He was sweaty, yes but almost as though in excitement or some sort of exhilarating thrill – as he displayed a tight lipped smirk across the right side of his face. Snowy barked furiously, but his voice lead out the sound of a struggle. “Hang in there buddy!” Tintin yelled.
“But why, why?” he cried out in a puzzling, desperate tone. “My brother, Mitsuhirato….” She wept. “He..all he wanted for you..was to die, and I’m going to be the one to do  it!”. She grabbed Tintin by the arm and swung him around by a chair making him collapse hard on the wooden floor. A streak of blood slid down from his head and his forearms and a back bruised. She attempted to stomp her foot in his face while he desperately try to dodge her. For a petite woman, she was undeniably strong, and definitely a skilled fighter. Perhaps it was the rage within her, the loss of a brother, the anger and determination of doing what he couldn’t.
Tintin crawled towards the counter as Yamayahirato took a minute to catch her breath, still, though not taking her eye off him. She was focused. She knew what she had to do, what she wanted to do, for her brother.

As Tintin rested himself against the counter, he felt weak, defeated, like he had never felt before. He tried to get up, fight for his life, but his knees buckled and more blood trickled down from his head. He felt dizzy, nauseous even.

Yamayahirato furiously made her way to Tintin, grabbing him tightly by the throat again and leaning him back down on the counter. He squealed in pain as Snowy’s choking barks could be heard from a distance, but he could see him at the corner of his eye. “You will die, you will die…today!” , she screamed.

With that, she pulled out a sharp razor blade from her pocket – just like the one in his dream. With Tintin’s blood over her hands she slowly, almost mockingly teased his neck with the tip of blade. Helpless, Tintin tried as best as he could to shove her way with weak kicks to her legs to no avail.
He was slowly drifting away from reality it seemed, the only sight he saw, was that off his whimpering companion, Snowy, trying to fight his way out of the lock he was in. A gunshot fired, an excruciating sense of pain. What was going on? He was sure he was still alive. Everything seemed hazy. Tintin lead out a screeching scream, almost implying that his soul had left his body.
